PROCTORVILLE — Fairland coach Jon Buchanan may not be a shot doctor, but he knew what was ailing his Lady Dragons.

Once Buchanan got his team’s shooting struggles healed in the second half, the Lady Dragons rallied to beat the Coal Grove Lady Hornets 59-41 Thursday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

“We just couldn’t make a shot,” said Buchanan. “Our percentage wasn’t good, but the biggest thing was the shot selection. We missed all kinds of shots around the basket.

“I was proud of the girls’ effort. Things didn’t go well the first half and they kept battling. We did a better job defensively in the second half and we started to hit some shots.”

The comeback win puts the Lady Dragons’ record at 9-10 overall and they finish tied for second in the OVC with Chesapeake at 7-3.

Ashley Adkins scored seven points in the first quarter as Coal Grove took a 13-9 lead.

Adkins had eight more points in the second quarter to offset nine points by Kayla Swiger and the Lady Hornets were up 31-27 at the half.

Coal Grove stayed close in the first half by converted 14 of 18 free throws.

Fairland’s defense limited Coal Grove to 10 points in the second half. Jaimie Philips had six points in the third quarter as the Lady Dragons outscored the Lady Hornets 17-3 to go ahead 44-34.

Kerie Napier had seven points in the fourth quarter as Fairland continued to pull away by outscoring Coal Grove 15-7 as Swiger scored eight more.

Swiger had 18 points to lead Fairland. Napier had 11 points while Chandler Fulks added 10 points. Phillips had 10 rebounds while Samantha Lamb and Swiger grabbed six each.

Adkins had 20 points to lead Coal Grove (4-16, 1-9).
