COAL GROVE — This week, the Coal Grove Betterment Club focused on some old and new ideas to improve the village.

The club set a date for its annual rummage sale at the Jae Roush Community Center. The event is slated for March 5 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Carol Gool, the club’s secretary, said they are asking for donations to the sale.

Gool said the money raised will go towards decorating Paul Porter Park during the holidays, as well as the village’s Breakfast with Santa event and other community projects. The club also offers a $1,000 scholarship to a graduating Dawson-Bryant senior to attend Ohio University Southern.

Items for donation can be brought to the Jae Roush building the day before, or if any items need to be picked up, Gool asked villagers to call (740) 532-2661 to arrange a pick-up time.

New for the Betterment Club this year will be a yard contest.

Gool said that the contest would be much like the Ironton In Bloom contest. Each month from June through September, the club will pick a home in the village that has an award winning yard. The winner will receive a sign placed in their yard for that month displaying their achievement, plus bragging rights until the next month’s pick.

Gool said people can nominate their own yards along with the club’s nominations.

This spring, the Betterment Club will be helping Abbott Home Care, who is sponsoring the event, with an Easter egg hunt at Paul Porter Park. The event is scheduled for April 16.
