Staff lounge dedication set

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — The Ted T. Barr oncology staff lounge at St. Mary’s Regional Cancer Center will be dedicated at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

The lounge was made possible by donations from the Barr family. Barr, who spent his career with the Huntington Police Department and the Cabell County Board of Education, died Dec. 1, 2009.

The lounge features a kitchenette, television, cabinets, a dining table and a massage chair. The lounge is on the sixth floor oncology area in South Patient Tower at the medical center.

Special Metals laying off 70 in Ky., W.Va.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) — A company that makes nickel alloys for the aerospace and gas drilling industries says it will lay off 70 workers in Huntington and Burnaugh, Ky.

Special Metals spokesman Dwight Weber told media outlets that the layoffs will affect 62 hourly workers in West Virginia and eight in Kentucky.

Weber says the cuts announced last week are driven by the economy.

Special Metals also laid off 40 workers last month in Huntington and 85 employees a year ago at the Huntington and Burnaugh plants.

Special Metals is owned by Precision Castparts Corp.

New Cabell County judge to be sworn in Monday

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) — Huntington attorney Paul T. Farrell will soon become West Virginia’s newest circuit judge.

Acting Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin appointed Farrell last month to replace retired Cabell County Circuit Judge Dan O’Hanlon. Farrell is scheduled to be sworn in at 3 p.m. Monday.

Farrell has specialized in civil and criminal defense during his career. He’s also a former assistant attorney general and counsel for the state Senate among other things.

Figuring out FAFSA at BCPL

ASHLAND, Ky. — Boyd County Public Library is offering current and future college students, and their parents, an opportunity to learn about the federal financial aid process from professionals.

Representatives from the Kentucky Higher Education Student Loan Corp. present “FAFSA: We Can Help … We Promise!!” at the Summit Branch on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Summit Branch is located at 1016 Summit Road, across from Boyd County Middle School.
