PEDRO — The Portsmouth Lady Trojans finally sized things up.

Locked in a tight battle with the Coal Grove Lady Hornets, the Lady Trojans used their size to pull away in the second half to a 51-43 win in the Division III sectional tournament semifinals.

“Their size really hurt us in the third quarter when they started pounding in the paint,” said Coal Grove coach Rick Roach.

Coal Grove was up 13-10 at the end of the first quarter with Portsmouth coming back to take a slim 22-21 lead at the half.

The Lady Trojans then outscored the Lady Hornets 11-8 in the third quarter to lead 33-29.

Katey Erwin scored eight points for Coal Grove in the fourth quarter but Tyler Mallory hit a pair of 3-pointers as Portsmouth held on for the win.

Ashley Adkins scored 12 points for the Lady Hornets with Erwin scoring 11 and Taylor Fleming added 10.

Tasha McGinnis and Hannah Foster scored 16 each for Portsmouth. Ri-chiel McGraw had 10 points.

Portsmouth plays top-seeded Oak Hill at 6:15 p.m. Saturday.
