Missed FTs costly as Redwomen lose in sectional tourney

WELLSTON — The Rock Hill Redwomen played even as far as the game went, but they lost the foul shooting contest.

Rock Hill had just one less free throw but was out-shot by four at the foul line in a 49-43 loss to the Southeastern Lady Panthers Wednesday in the Div. III sectional tournament.

The Redwomen and Lady Panthers each attempted 27 foul shots, but Rock Hill made only 11 to Southeastern’s 15.

“We had six or seven more games where some foul shots or a turnover here and there we could have won nine or 10 games. Tonight was another one of those games,” said Rock Hill coach Alvin Carpenter.

“But the girls gave a great effort again. They play hard from start to finish and they showed a lot of improvement this season.”

Brook Knipp scored a season-high 12 points along with four assists and six steals to pace the Redwomen (5-16).

Brooke Hanshaw scored 11 points, Dani Crabtree had 10 rebounds and Chelsea Harper added eight and seven steals.

Southeastern (8-13) was led by Erin Uhrig with 13 with Lydia Dresbach and Kylan Strausbaugh scoring 11 each.

Courtney Duncan had five points for Rock Hill in the first quarter and the game was tied at 11.

Each team scored 12 points in the second quarter and it was 23 all at the half. Rock Hill missed nine free throws in the quarter.

Southeastern went up a 34-33 at the end of the third quarter despite seven points by Hanshaw.

Brook Knipp accounted for eight of Rock Hill’s 10 points in the fourth quarter, but Uhrig scored 10 points as the Lady Panthers managed to squeeze out the win.
