Early figures for tax collection already at $9M

With less than a week after the deadline for the first half collection of property tax, County Treasurer Office workers continue processing taxes that came in by mail.
County property holders had until this past Friday to pay their taxes either by coming into the courthouse, using one of the five area banks that have agreed to accept property tax checks or by mailing in the check.
“We are even receiving mail today that was timely postmarked, including some from mortgage companies,” County Treasurer Stephen Burcham said. “As we got quite a volume of mail last week, we are in the process of getting that summarized and posted. We are working diligently to get that taken care of.”
In early February Burcham’s office sent out approximately 49,000 bills, with some for multiple parcels.
As of Wednesday morning the treasurer’s office had collected $9.2 million in real estate taxes and $198,000 for mobile homes.
At the time the tax bills went out, Burcham had anticipated collecting more than $26 million in this first half. That was the figure collected for the first half of 2010. Burcham said the trend in recent years has been for collections to be steadily increasing.
“I am anticipating hitting the original revenue mark,” he said.
Burcham expects a final figure by mid-March.
