Longtime community activist and prominent architect Robert Dalton will be honored for his contributions to the county in a bridge dedication ceremony Saturday, March 19.
Dalton, who designed the annex to the courthouse and the Lawrence County Municipal Courthouse at Chesapeake, also served on the Greater Lawrence Chamber of Commerce’s transportation committee. In that role, he was involved in the work to create the Chesapeake Bypass.
“He literally shaped a lot of Lawrence County,” County Commissioner Jason Stephens said at the commission’s Thursday meeting.
The bridge that will bear his name is on the Proctorville segment of the bypass over Paddy Creek.
A reception will follow the morning dedication at the Rome Church of Christ, a structure Dalton also designed.
Also the commissioners, at the request of Tim Porter of the Union-Rome Sewer District, approved the termination of sewer service for all delinquent accounts.
“All other utilities have the ability to do this,” Stephens said. “It tends to make you pay bills on time.”
In other business the commission
• Rejected a bid of $501 from G&P Meals and Transportation for a used ambulance that the EMS wanted to dispose of. The minimum bid was $3,000.
• Appointed County Engineer Doug Cade and Union Township Trustee Terry Porter to the KYOVA Board.
• Accepted the weekly dog warden report where 35 dogs were destroyed, 11 dogs sold and six dogs redeemed by their owners. Currently there are 97 dogs in custody.
