PROCTORVILLE — On Thursday, Ohio University Southern will host the second annual Women’s Resource Fair at the Proctorville Center.
The fair will showcase representatives and community groups who will present health, nutrition and wellness education. The event is geared toward women, but organizer Julie Huron, said the event is for anyone who wants to know about family resources.
Huron, a student ambassador for OUS, said she came up with the idea for the Women’s Resource Fair while taking a women’s studies class.
“I kind of expressed interest to know what resources were available to women,” she said, mentioning the difficulty of finding specialized women’s services in Lawrence County.
Last year’s fair brought 12 vendors to the center. Huron said most of the same vendors would be back this year, and she hopes to double that. She also said there would be a broad range of vendors.
Some of this year’s vendors include Legal Aid of Ohio, Care Source, Elite Fitness, Tri-State Homeschoolers, Family Guidance, West Virginia Home Birth Midwives Association, WIC, and Ebenezer Medical Outreach, as well as counseling services and domestic violence counselors. There will also be a Zumba demonstration at 1 p.m.
Student services specialist Sarah Kyllo said there are a lot of demands placed on women and sometimes it’s difficult to know where to go for help.
“(The fair) will connect women with resources in the community,” she said. Kyllo also said the fair is a way to increase the diversity of activities on campus.
Huron believes that the Women’s Resource Fair would be beneficial to anyone who stopped in to check it out. “There are so many different levels of what’s available,” she said. “And it’s all under one roof.”
The fair is free and open to the public and is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
“The goal is to get information out,” Huron said. “We’re trying to make it fun.”
