SAGINAW, Mich. — Trailing by one point on the one-yard line, Saginaw decided to put the ball in the hands of the league’s leading passer.
It proved to be not-so-solid strategy as Tommy Jones was intercepted by Wilbert Brinson in the end zone to secure Hungtington’s 38-37 victory Sunday.
It was the second time the Hammer’s defense came up huge as they intercepted Jones’ two-point conversion with 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter.
Huntington’s Martevious Young accounted for 208 total yards, 141 yards on 12-of-33 passing and 57 yards on 10 carries.
Jones was limited to 124 yards on 18-of-28 passing with six touchdowns.
The Hammer victory teamed with Eastern Kentucky’s win over Northern Kentucky forced a four-way tie for first place.
Huntington is tied with Northern Kentucky, Saginaw and Eastern Kentucky.
The Hammer hosts Eastern Kentucky on Friday.
