Ironton resident makes Toledo’s dean’s list

TOLEDO — Ashley Moritz, a intervention specialist and special education major and a resident of Ironton, was among more than 3,000 students from The University of Toledo who made the Fall 2010 Dean’s List.

The Dean’s List recognizes full-time undergraduate students who earn a 3.5 or above GPA for the semester.

The University of Toledo, established in 1872, is a diverse, student-centered public metropolitan research university. The University is home to more than 23,000 students across 14 colleges and three primary campuses.

Lucas joins Bellefonte Women’s Care

RUSSELL, Ky. ­—Officials at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital (OLBH) have announced Sarah Lucas, MSN, APRN, WHNP-BC, has joined the staff of Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital’s Women’s Care (2001 Winchester Ave.).

Bellefonte Women’s Care is dedicated to the hospital’s focus on better health for women of the Tri-State.

Lucas is a women’s health nurse practitioner (WHNP) and has joined Kurt Jaenicke, M.D., F.A.C.O.G., in practice at Bellefonte Women’s Care.

Lucas earned her master’s degree in nursing from the University of Cincinnati, as well as earning her bachelor’s degree in nursing from West Virginia University’s Charleston campus. She also earned an undergraduate degree from Marshall University in Huntington, W.Va.

Lucas brings to Bellefonte Women’s Care practice and expertise in all area’s of women’s health and most recently worked at Cabell Huntington Hospital. Lucas is a member of the National Association of Nurse Practitioners in Women’s Health and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.

SSU Armed Forces Appreciation Day scheduled

PORTSMOUTH — Armed Forces Appreciation Day will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, when the Shawnee State University Bears Baseball hosts Cedarville University at Branch Rickey Park in Portsmouth.

All fans in attendance are eligible for a random drawing of SSU T-Shirts, Hats and two tickets to a Cincinnati Reds game in 2011. The Bears baseball team will sport camouflage game jerseys in tribute to veterans and active duty military members.

KDMC says ‘Take control of heart failure’

ASHLAND, Ky. – Having heart failure doesn’t mean you can’t lead a normal, active life. By taking control, and understanding and carefully following your treatment plan, you can live successfully with heart failure.

King’s Daughters Medical Center nurse practitioner Donna Holbrook will address these issues – and more – when the Heart Failure Support Group meets from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 19, in the lower level conference room 4 at King’s Daughters Office Park, 835 Central Ave.

The support group is free and open to anyone, and their loved ones, with heart failure. Physician referral is not required, although RSVPs are requested. Please call (606) 408-6000 or (606) 408-6462 to reserve your seat. Each meeting includes both a formal presentation and an opportunity for members to share their experiences and help one another.

“Along with following your treatment plan, we can help you learn to overcome common heart failure obstacles and lead a full life,” said heart failure nurse Barbara Davis, who facilitates the meetings.

The focus of the next Heart Failure Support Group meeting will be “Keeping Active When Exercise is Limited” and will take place Tuesday, May 17.

Singer-songwriter Ted Kamp tour headed to Ironton

Singer-songwriter, Ted Russell Kamp is on tour to support his yet-to-be-released new record, “Get Back To The Land” and will be in Ironton on April 9 at Boomer’s.

Kamp is Shooter Jennings’ longtime bass player and has released four solo albums to date. His last album, “Poor Man’s Paradise,” was named one of the top 100 Americana albums of 2008.

Volunteers needed at the PAC

Not your parents’ board games

ASHLAND, Ky. — Spend a fun afternoon playing some new and different board games at Boyd County Public Library on Saturday, April 2.

Not Your Parents’ Board Games is for ages 10 and up, and runs from noon to 4 p.m. at the Main Branch, 1740 Central Ave.

Games that will be featured include: Fluxx, a card game where the rules are always changing, and so is the object of the game; Munchkin, a game similar to Dungeons & Dragons, without the role playing; HeroClix, a game in which you build teams of superheroes and battle it out; and a new version of Risk, the classic game of world domination.

No registration is needed. Library staff will explain the rules and help people play.

Free health screenings at Morning Pointe

RUSSELL, Ky. — For the residents at Morning Pointe Senior Living of Ridge in Russell, Ky., a simple walk down the hall is all it will take to get their blood pressure checked next week.

The free health screening, that is open to the public, is part of King’s Daughters Health Connection.

The community outreach program will offer free screening procedures for blood sugar, total cholesterol, blood pressure, blood oxygen levels and pulse.

Tracy Woods, an outreach specialist with King’s Daughters Medical Center, will also provide a variety of educational materials to participants.

Appointments are not necessary and fasting is not required. KDMC is a non-profit, locally owned hospital founded in 1899. “KDMC is a big part of our community and we are so very fortunate to be a part of their outreach program.

It means a lot to us and to our residents,” says Kelly Cline, executive director of Morning Pointe Senior Living.
