GALLIPOLIS — Devin Darby gave more than was expected and it proved to be more than the Gallipolis Blue Devils wanted.
Darby threw a complete game as the Rock Hill Redmen beat Gallipolis 5-2 on Tuesday.
Darby struck out seven and did not walk a batter as he fashioned a four-hitter. He hit two batters and both runs were earned.
“Darby threw well. He went longer than I had planned, but he was in a groove,” said Redmen coach Barry Litteral. “As a team we played well.”
Rock Hill (2-0) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Shane Russell singled, Drew Kidd and Cody Massie walked to load the bases and Matt Jenkins had a two-run single.
Two more runs scored in the fourth without the aid of a hit.
Darby and Jenkins were safe on errors and Darby scored on a passed ball. Jenkins went to third base and scored on a wild pitch.
Gallipolis (1-1) got the two runs back in the fifth when Casey Denbow singled, Ben Saunders was hit by a pitch, Tyler Davis grounded out and Caleb Warnimount singled in the runners.
Rock Hill got an insurance run in the sixth when Chris Donohue and Ryan Depriest singled, moved up on a passed ball, and Jared Bruce was safe on an error.
