PROCTORVILLE — It’s better to give than to receive, unless you’re playing baseball.
The Fairland Dragons gave away too much and as a result gave away the game in the process in a 6-4 loss to the Huntington Highlander Wednesday.
Fairland was guilty of five errors that led to five unearned runs and spoiled the combined three-hit pitching of Chad Fisher and Alex Thackston.
“We gave it away,” said Fairland coach Bryan Ward. “When you give up six runs on three hits, you know there’s something that didn’t go right.”
The Dragons (1-3) still had a chance to win the game when they loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the seventh.
After two pop outs, Matt Campbell hit a drive to centerfield into a 25-mile an hour wind that was caught against the fence.
“I thought when (Campbell) hit it that it was going to be a grand slam,” said Ward.
Fairland took a 3-0 lead in the first inning.
Cory Barker walked, Thackston singled and they moved up on a passed ball. Fisher double both runners home and scored on Eric Riley’s ground out.
Huntington got a run in the second when Trace Dempsey walked, move to second on a passed ball, took third on an error and scored on a sacrifice fly.
The Highlanders took a 4-3 lead in the third inning.
After Elias Haikal walked the Dragons committed three straight errors and Ben Haer had a two-run single.
The Dragons got a run back in the sixth inning on a single by Riley and a double by Josh Ross.
Huntington capped the scoring with two runs in the seventh.
Brunetti had a two-out single, went to second on an error, stole third, Ronnie Musick walked and stole second and Dempsey doubled.
Fairland visits Symmes Valley Thursday.
