CHESAPEAKE — This time the Chesapeake Lady Panthers good play didn’t go unrewarded.
After suffering four tough losses, the Lady Panthers reaped the benefits of good play as they beat the Coal Grove Lady Hornets 9-1 Wednesday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
“It’s good to get a win,” said Chesapeake coach Aaron Rice. “Coal Grove is a better team. Their pitchers threw strikes. We had to play well.”
Sarah Rice got the win as she allowed just five hits, struck out six and walked four in going the distance to get the win.
Sarah Mayo keyed the offense by going 4-5 with two doubles, a triple and four runs scored. Jordan Porter was 3-3 as Chesapeake had 13 hits.
Mayo singled, Rice was safe on a fielder’s choice and Macy Allen had a two-run triple and the Lady Panthers led 2-0 in the first inning.
Porter singled, Ali Ransbottom walked, Mayo doubled, Rice walked and an error helped Chesapeake score four runs in the second.
Two runs scored in the third when Porter tripled, Ransbottom singled, Mayo double and Rice singled.
The final run came home in the fifth when Mayo tripled and Rice hit a sacrifice fly.
