Ironton suffers tough tennis loss

The Ironton Fighting Tigers were tied 2-2 with the Wheelersburg Pirates only to get edged in the final match as they suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 loss Wednesday.

No. 1 singles player Andrew Hicks beat Aaron Parker 6-2, 6-3 while No. 1 doubles team Mason Weisgarber and Tres Wilks beat Molly Knapp and Ethan Hiles 3-6, 6-4, 7-5.

The Pirates evened it up as Walker Roe topped Ironton’s Jordan Sheridan 6-1, 7-5 and Kouin Hiles topped Nathan Hale by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores.

In the No. 2 team doubles match, Schylar Fields and Jon Shotsky won the first game 6-2 over Jacob Kirkendall and Jamie Crowder, then lost a tight 6-4 decision and the decisive game 6-1.

Ironton hosts Minford at 4:30 p.m. Monday.
