A good meet with a good cause.
The third annual Arthur Lydiard Track and Field Classic will be held Friday at South Point High School with proceeds to be donated to the New Zealand Earthquake Relief Fund and directed to the cit of Christchurch that suffered a quake in February.
The quake killed 163 people and destroyed the downtown business district.
The meet was named for the late New Zealand running coach who trained 23 athletes to Olympic medals. He was a good friend Pointers’ head coach Randy Smith.
“Arthur was a friend and spent a week here in South Point in 2004 working with us and our athletes,” said Smith. “He was very giving of his time and track knowledge.”
South Point also sponsored a running clinic during Lydiard’s visit to train other area runners.
A large number of teams are scheduled to participate including Ironton, Coal Grove, Rock Hill, Fairland, Chesapeake, Green, Portsmouth, River Valley, Russell, Spring Valley, Greenup County and host South Point.
The meet begins at 5 p.m.
