SOUTH POINT — There was enough pressure being in a 2-2 game in the bottom of the seventh inning, but Brianna Whaley added a little more.
Whaley singled to start the bottom of the seventh and used her speed to put added pressure on the Fairland defense. Whaley’s baserunning caused some physical and mental mistakes as she scored on an error to lift the South Point Lady Pointers to a 3-2 win over the Lady Dragons on Monday.
After Whaley singled, Miranda Lewis struck out with Whaley stealing second base. The third strike got away but Lewis still could not run since first base was considered occupied.
But the Fairland defense made a throw to first base and Whaley continued to third. Morgan Wells then attempted a squeeze bunt and missed the pitch, but the ball got away from the catcher allowing Whaley to score the winning run.
“Neither offense was doing extremely well for either team, so it came down to who made the mistakes during the crucial times,” said Lady Pointers’ coach Tara Layne.
Fairland went up 1-0 in the first when Chelsey Stanley reached on an error, moved up on two ground outs and scored on a hit by Sashe Burcham.
South Point (13-2, 7-1) took a 2-1 lead in the third inning.
Katelyn Leonard reached on an error, Kaitlyn Brown had a sacrifice bunt, a passed ball sent Leonard to third and Ashley Goodall had an RBI single.
Goodall stole second, Andrea Kleinman was safe on a fielder’s choice and Goodall scored on an error.
Fairland tied the game in the sixth when Jaimie Phillisp singled, moved up on Kerie Napier’s sacrifice, took third on a passed ball and scored ahead of the throw home on Stormie Spitzer’s ground ball.
Burcham was 2-3 for Fairland while Whaley went 2-3 for South Point.
