SOUTH POINT — The Rock Hill Redmen had their assignment should they choose to accept it.

The Redmen had the challenge of winning two games on the same day in order to clinch at least a share of the Ohio Valley Conference baseball title on Thursday and they did just that as they beat South Point 3-1 in the completion of a suspended game, then won the regularly scheduled game 12-2.

The win gives Rock Hill a 13-1 record overall and they finish the OVC with a 9-1 record. Fairland is 7-1 with two league games to play.

“Our kids knew what they were playing for and they got it,” said Rock Hill coach Barry Litteral. “Our kids played hard and we hit the ball well. They’ve played well all season.”

Devin Darby picked up both wins. Darby pitched the final two innings of the suspended game, then tossed a four-hitter in the second game. He struck out eight and walked two.

“Darby threw the ball well. He got a little tired at the end, but he battled through it,” said Litteral.

The suspended game resumed at Rock Hill and the Redmen took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Matt Jenkins singled, Ryan Depriest was hit by a pitch, Jared Bruce put down a sacrifice bunt and Nick McGuire hit a sacrifice fly.

South Point tied the game on a home run by Kyle Winkler in the fourth, but the Redmen scored twice in the sixth to win.

Jenkins was hit by a pitch, Depriest beat out an infield hit and Bruce singled in the go-ahead run. Shane Russell reached on an error and a wild pitch scored an insurance run.

The second game started in similar fashion as Rock Hill took a 1-0 lead in the first when Kidd and Cody Massie reached on errors.

South Point tied the game with a run in the second, but the Redmen went up 4-1 in the third.

Russell was safe on an error and stole second and third. Jonathan Schob walked and Massie singled for a run. Chris Donohue singled to load the bases and Darby had a two-run single.

Depriest singled, stole second and scored on a hit by Russell to make it 5-1 in the fourth inning.

Another run scored in the fifth when Donohue, Darby and Jenkins were all hit by pitches and a wild pitch scored pinch-runner Layden Delawder.

Rock Hill put the game away with three runs in each the sixth and seventh innings.

In the sixth, Russell and Kidd walked and a wild pitch scored the first run. Schob doubled home the next run and Darby had an RBI single.

In the seventh, Russell walked with two outs, Kidd was hit by a pitch and Schob tripled for two RBIs. Massie reached on an error as Schob scored.

Rock Hill plays at home on Friday at 5 p.m. in the sectional tournament against the winner of Tuesday’s game between Chesapeake and Portsmouth.
