For the fourth straight year, the Dragons have won or share the Ohio Valley Conference baseball title.

And for the second straight year, they had to win nine straight league games to achieve the feat.

Fairland lost to Rock Hill in its first OVC game this season. But an 8-2 win over the Chesapeake Panthers on Monday capped a nine-game winning streak that enabled the Dragons to gain a share of the title with Rock Hill.

“It’s something for our seniors to win the conference all four years,” said Fairland coach Bryan Ward.

“We had to win out and we won nine in a row. That’s two years in a row. That’s a credit to the kids.”

Fairland is now 13-7 overall and ends the OVC at 9-1.

The Dragons got all the runs they really needed when they scored four times in the second inning.

Alex Thackston doubled and scored when Josh Ross reached on an error. Matt Campbell and Alex Warner hit into force plays for a run, Warner stole second, Kyle Raines singled in pinch-runner Cody Midkiff and Corey Barker doubled home a run.

Two more runs scored in the third to lead 6-0.

Chad Fisher singled, stole second and scored on a hit by Thackston. After Thackson stole second and went to third on a passed ball, Ross hit a sacrifice fly.

The Panthers got their runs in the fourth inning.

Jake Lewis was hit by a pitch, Tommy Noble and Nick Parnell singled for a run, Steven Zimmerman walked and Seth Skeens grounded out as a run scored.

Fairland got the two runs back in the sixth inning when Tanner Sowards doubled, Jon Baise beat out an infield hit and a throwing error allowed both runners to score.

Raines got the win as he teamed with Thackston and Tanner Schenewark to limit Chesapeake to five hits.

Tommy Noble and Nick Parnell each went 2-3 for the Panthers.

Fairland hosts Portsmouth West at 5 p.m. Friday in the Division III sectional finals.
