This event is co-sponsored by the Wayne National Forest, Lawrence County Bass Club, Izaak Walton League, National Wild Turkey Federation and Ohio University Southern Nature Center.

The sponsoring organizations have a strong commitment to the community’s youth, and are proud to host a memorable day of fishing for kids and their families. “The Derby’s intent is encourage kids to enjoy and appreciate the outdoors, in this case through fishing,” said Patrick Mercer, Ironton Ranger District Wildlife Biologist. “One of the other big goals for this event is to encourage families to learn about and enjoy the outdoors together- something that can be passed on from generation to generation.

Participants should bring their own fishing pole, bucket, and bait if they have them, but some poles and bait will be available for children who do not have their own. All who attend are encouraged to dress appropriately for the weather, including bringing a hat and sunscreen.

As a result of the planned activities and for the safety of participants, the Lake Vesuvius boat ramp will be closed during the event, but is anticipated to re-open by 2 p.m. Information on the event is available by calling the Wayne National Forest’s Ironton Ranger District at (740) 534-6500.
