HAVERHILL — Two Kentucky men escaped serious injury when the airplane they were in crashed Saturday night in an area off Gallia Pike near Richendollar Road in Haverhill.
Steven A. Hall 56, of Catlettsburg, was flying his Cessna 172 F with his instructor, Edward Edwards, 45, of Ashland, Ky., and had just left the Ashland/Boyd County Regional Airport when the electric power to the cockpit malfunctioned.
According to a prepared statement from the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Hall prepared to turn the airplane back toward the airport but both men noticed the engine had given a slight “sputter.”
Both occupants told authorities the airplane’s RPMs began to drop until the aircraft lost power.
The airplane was guided as much as possible until it crashed in an open field approximately 400 feet east of Gallia Pike.
Both men received minor injuries and were treated at the scene by Green Township Fire Department and EMS.
The incident is under investigation by the state patrol and the Federal Aviation Administration.
