ASHLAND, Ky. — So, where does Nick Duffield go from here?
Playing in his first-ever AJGA golf event, the 16-year-old from Chesapeake High School stormed back from five shots down on the final day to win the Natural Resource Partners’ Bluegrass Junior Tournament at the Bellefonte Country Club on Friday.
Duffield trailed Stephen Stallings Jr. of Louisville going into the final round, but he sank seven birdies en route to a 7-under 63 to win the event.
“I came into the tournament shooting for a top five finish seeing that it was my first-ever AJGA event,” said Duffield. “It felt good collecting all those birdies today.”
The three-day, 54-hole event featured a field of 108 boys in ages 12-18 from 22 states and seven foreign countries. The par-70 course is played over 6,002 yards for the boys and 5,603 for the girls.
Emma Talley of Princeton won the girls’ tournament for the second straight year with a 3-over 213.
Duffield finished with a three-day total of 205 as he finished at 5-under. He had identical rounds of 71 on each of the first two days.
“I told myself I just had to keep playing how I was playing in order to have a chance to win,” said Duffield.
Fred Allen Meyer of Nicholasville was next at 207, Tyler McDaniel of Manchester shot a 208 and Stallings finished at 209.
