Proceeds to go for renovating gym floor
CHESAPEAKE — There’s a reason why they call it the Chesapeake Community Center.
First off, the former elementary school is open to the community with its youth and senior sports programs and fitness center. But it is also the place where community volunteers come to focus their time and energy toward making it one of the recreational hubs for the village.
In recent months, volunteers have given their time to renovate the center’s gym from installing state-of-the-art lighting to painting the walls. Now the focus is on the aging gym floor.
“The floor is in bad shape,” Director Ruth Damron said. “It hasn’t been redone in 10 to 12 years and has taken a lot of wear and tear. It is going to take several thousand dollars. We have to sand it and do some refinishing. We haven’t got an exact estimate. It will be $3,000 to $4,000.”
This weekend is the first fundraiser whose proceeds will go toward renovating the floor.
Starting Friday will be the inaugural Southeast Havoc 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament. Organizing this is Chris Hunt along with Scott Jackson and Les Wilson. There will be two brackets — adult teams for men and women 17 years and older and a youth bracket for those 16 years old and younger.
The fee for adult team is $60 with the youth teams at $40 a team.
The tournament will be double elimination with the championship games on Sunday.
“All the money goes back into the gym,” Damron said. “I have been so fortunate to have met these guys who are so civic-minded.”
The weekend after the tournament will be a rummage sale whose proceeds will also go toward fixing up the gym floor. The sale will be Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the center.
“We have all kinds of things,” Damron said. “We have some tables, a little bit of furniture, dishes. We have so many nice items from board members. Some of the things will be priced and some are make an offer.”
Anyone wanting more information or wishing to donate items for the sale can call Damron at (740) 867-4532.
