CHESAPEAKE — Two men were arrested and another remains at large following a burglary and subsequent police chase in Chesapeake Thursday afternoon.
The burglary happened around 1:38 p.m. at 2815 County Road 115.
According to a release from the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, the homeowners, John and Amanda Carter, had been away when they arrived to find their front door open.
They went in to find three men going through their belongings. The woman ran to a neighbor’s home to call the sheriff’s office. John Carter confronted the suspects and was assaulted by at least two of them.
When Deputy Perry Adkins arrived he noticed a white van that fit the description of the vehicle at the scene of the crime. When the deputy signaled for the van to stop, the driver refused and a chase ensued, the release states.
The chase went from State Route 243 at Bradrick, north on State Route 7 and crossed the 31st Street Bridge into Huntington, W.Va.
Adkins continued the pursuit through several Huntington streets when the van stopped near the riverbank floodwall near 20th Street. The three men then fled on foot.
The deputy apprehended one suspect, Elmer M. Mills, 36, on the riverbank. The Huntington Police Department began searching for the other suspects and found Teddy Mulkey near a barge. A third suspect has not been arrested.
John Carter suffered an abrasion to the back of the head and an abrasion to his left eye.
The two suspects that were apprehended were arrested by HPD and will be held as fugitives from justice for the pending charges in Lawrence County.
The charges include aggravated burglary, felonious assault, and fleeing and eluding an officer.
The case remains under investigation.
