CHESAPEAKE — James E. “Jim” Rice, 82, of Chesapeake, passed away Monday, July 25, 2011, at home. He was born Oct. 25, 1928, to the late Londo and Bessie Swartzwelder Rice. He retired from International Nickel in Huntington, W.Va., and served his country in the Korean Conflict. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one sister and brother-in-law, Avalyn Rice Hulbert and Jack Hulbert; mother and father-in-law, Merv and Bertha Shafer Dornon; one sister-in-law, Stella Bennett Dornon; one brother-in-law, Ronnie Dornon; one great granddaughter, Erin Suzanne Rice; and lifelong friend, Merrill Rice of Huntington.

Jim is survived by his wife Betty Dornon Rice; sons, Kevin Rice of Chesapeake and Aaron (Kim) Rice of Proctorville; three granddaughters, Kristen (Justin) Wine of Huntington, and Sarah and Laura Rice of Proctorville; one great granddaughter, Adaleigh Grace Wine of Huntington; one sister, Dorothy Rice of South Point; one brother, Carl (Virginia) Rice of Coal Grove; one brother-in-law, Sonny (Carolyn) Dornon of Proctorville; lifelong friend, Ralph Carrico of Ironton; and his Chesapeake United Methodist Church family. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Chesapeake United Methodist Church, Chesapeake, or Hospice of Huntington, W.Va. Burial was in the Garden of Christus at Highland Memorial Gardens, South Point. Jerry Frye officiated at the private family service. Arrangements were handled by Hall Funeral Home, Proctorville.
