Johnny Markins

MEDWAY — Johnny David Markins, 78, of Medway, went home to be with the Lord, Thursday, Aug. 4, 2011, at Hospice of Dayton. The Pedro native was born Jan. 10, 1933, the son of the late Willard and Irene Roof Markins.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 55 years, Carol Aldridge Markins and four brothers, Arthur, Glen, Gary and Rick.

He is survived by his son, Mark Markins of Springfield and daughter Peggy (Ron) Barnette of Columbus. He is also survived by two sisters, Wilma Bare and Thelma Shope, both of Ironton, and two brothers, Harold (Gennie) Markins of North Carolina and Paul (Janie) Markins of Napoleon; numerous nieces and nephews, including special nephew Randy (Kathy) Shope.

Mr. Markins is a United States Army Veteran, serving from 1951 to 1981, retiring as a Sergeant Major at United States Army Forces Command in Fort McPherson, Ga. He was stationed in Germany (3 times) Virginia, Vietnam, Pennsylvania, Okinawa, Kentucky, Korea, Maryland (2 times), Ohio and New Jersey. Awards and decorations include Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Army Occupation Medal, Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry Unit Citation with Palm, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and Overseas Service Bars.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Hayes-Phillips Funeral Home with Rev. Glen Carmon officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery where military graveside honors will be provided. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until the time of the service Wednesday at the funeral home.
