MANCHESTER — Once the Symmes Valley Vikings realized the game had started, things went pretty well.

Coming off a tough loss to Chesapeake last week, the Vikings were sluggish to start Friday’s game against the Manchester Greyhounds.

But four first quarter touchdowns in a seven-minute span ignited the Vikings to a 41-0 halftime lead and 47-22 win over the Greyhounds.

“I thought our kids played well. Manchester came out the first drive and started taking the ball down the field and our kids realized we were starting the game. Our kids played well from that point,” said Vikings’ coach Rusty Webb.

“Our first two units played very well.”

Alec Herrell ran well as he carried just four times for 145 yards. D.J. Miller ran only three times for 69 yards and he scored three touchdowns — one on a punt return.

Symmes Valley (3-1) racked up 462 total yards including 446 on the ground. Backup Dustin Holbrook ran 13 times for 108 yards.

The Vikings scored with 7:29 left in the first quarter as Herrell ran 49 yards to cap a 72-yard, 3-play drive and it was 7-0.

Miller went 37 yards to end a 4-play, 72-yard march and it was 13-0.

Herrell had a 67-yard run to set up a 1-yard scoring run by Tyler Rowe and it was 20-0.

The Vikings recovered a fumble on the kickoff at the 9-yard line and Miller scored on the next play for a 27-0 lead.

Quinton Bare ran 28 yards for the Vikings next touchdown and Miller ran back a punt 51 yards with 4:54 left in the half to make it 41-0.

Manchester got on the scoreboard in the third quarter when Dalton Walters hit Dalton West with a 17-yard TD pass to cap a 55-yard, 9-play drive. The two hooked up for the conversion and trailed 41-8.

The Vikings fumbled the kickoff at the 21 and four plays later Travis Combs scored on a 2-yard run and it was 41-14.

Symmes Valley’s second and third units put together a 57-yard, 6-play drive that ended with a 16-yard pass from Tanner Mays to Matt Floyd and it was 47-14.

The Greyhounds (0-4) got the final score with 1:59 left as Ian Gulley ran 2 yards for the touchdown and added the conversion.
