Lady Hornets beat River Valley; Flyers’ soccer falls to Clay, 2-1

COAL GROVE — The Coal Grove Lady Hornets continued to do what they’ve been doing all season.

The Lady Hornets posted their first volleyball win ever over the River Valley Lady Raiders and remained unbeaten in the Ohio Valley Conference on Thursday.

Coal Grove beat the Lady Raiders 25-21, 25-23, 214-26, and 25-14.

“The girls played their hearts out,” said Lady Hornets’ coach Trish Damron.

Gabbie Carpenter and Bailey Harrison scored 19 points each to pace Coal Grove while Haley Johnson had 9 kills and Harrison added 8 kills. Cami Hillier had 44 setting assists.

The Lady Hornets (9-1, 4-0) host Fairland on Tuesday in a league game.

Flyers fall to Clay

The rain was gloomy and so was the outcome.

The St. Joseph Flyers jumped out to a 1-0 lead but couldn’t hold on as the Portsmouth Clay Panthers rallied to take a 2-1 soccer win on Monday.

“It was a scrappy game on both sides,” said Flyers’ coach Dan Blair. “We played hard but we didn’t take advantage of our several chances.”

Joseph Payton scored the Flyers’ only goal off an assist pass from Nick Roach.

St. Joseph (5-2-1) plays at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Lincoln County, W.Va.
