City council needs the best mix of leaders

Ironton is headed in the right direction, but it is still vitally important that voters elect the best individuals to lead the city.

Four candidates are seeking three seats. Incumbents Frank Murphy and Kevin Waldo are joined in the field by newcomers Aaron Bollinger and Philip Heald.

Although each made a strong case they would be strong leaders for the city, sadly, three somewhat get our endorsement by default. Those are Waldo, Bollinger and Heald.

Kevin Waldo, an attorney who now has four years experience including two as the vice mayor, has a firm grasp of the challenges facing the city. His track record seems to show he will be deliberate in his decisions and not be influenced by others.

Aaron Bollinger stays busy in his day job as a detective with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office. He doesn’t have to jump into the realm of elected office. It is encouraging that he chose to do so. His strong personality will help ensure that the voters are represented by someone who cannot be bullied or bought.

Philip Heald wants to make a difference and his background as an attorney should help him do that by carefully analyzing every situation and working toward a solution. What he lacks in political experience seems to be matched by what he lacks in personal agendas. That is a positive thing for the citizens.

The fourth candidate, Frank Murphy, showed little interest in participating in the process. He refused interview requests, ignored calls to meet in person, didn’t respond to a questionnaire sent to all candidates and didn’t participate in the meet the candidates event.

We cannot support an elected representative who appears to have little interest in communicating with his constituents.

The City of Ironton is on the verge of a new era of prosperity, but it will take strong leaders working together to lead the way.
