Veterans need remembered all year long

Out of the 365 days on the calendar, we basically set aside two — Memorial Day and Veterans Day — to honor the men and women whose sacrifices have allowed us the freedoms we hold so dear. That math just doesn’t seem to add up correctly.
Last Friday, our community marked the Veterans Day holiday with a variety of services and recognitions to honor our nation’s heroes. More events are set for today.
We applaud every group, business or organization that has worked to make this happen. The only disappointing part is that we, as a society, sometimes take our veterans for granted the rest of the year.
Why does it take a day on the calendar to make our veterans important? These men and women are working for us every day.
Hopefully, our community and each of us as individuals can hold on to the patriotism and pride evoked from these Veterans Day celebrations and carry them throughout the year.
Without our brave soldiers defending everything we hold dear our nation would not be what it is today. And despite some of the challenges facing America, we are still the greatest country in world.
Make no mistake about it, that designation would not be possible without our veterans.
