John Carey served Ohio very well

All the citizens of Ohio — and specifically Lawrence County — have lost an elected representative who has worked diligently on their behalf for many years. Southern Ohio has lost a voice in Columbus.
John Carey, of Wellston, has resigned his post as Ohio representative for the 87th District so he can take a position at Shawnee State University. Prior to being elected to the 87th House District, Carey served in the Senate and a previous stint in the House of Representatives.
We are happy that John has found the position at SSU and think he will certainly help the university continue to grow and serve the community.
However, our region lost a partner and lost someone who had great experience and understanding of the issues facing southern Ohio and the entire state. His economic background and grasp of the financial challenges facing Ohio will not be easily replaced.
Many times it seems elected officials simply are in it for themselves. John seemed to be doing it for the right reasons and worked to serve his constituents instead of his party.
The Republicans in the Ohio House will get to choose his successor who will complete the unexpired term that ends in December of 2012. That individual will also have an opportunity to seek a full two-year term to begin in 2013.
Several Lawrence Countians have expressed interest and would provide our region with a presence at the statehouse. But, regardless of who gets the GOP nod or wins the election race, they will have some big shoes to fill.
