SOUTH POINT — Brandon Barnes tried.

Barnes hit a school-record 10 3-pointers and scored 45 points but it wasn’t enough as the Sheldon Clark Cardinals outscored the South Point Pointers 86-74 on Friday in the season opener.

“The second quarter did us in. We got in some foul trouble and got behind 14. But if we play that hard against everybody, we’ll win some games. Sheldon Clark is a very good team,” said South Point coach Chris Barnes.

The Cardinals (1-0) had six players in double figures and hit 10 3-pointers as a team.

B.J. Moore led Sheldon Clark with 23 points. Chase Kirk had 16 points, 6-foot-4 seventh-grader Dylan James scored 15, Chase Parley 12 and Justin Johnson and Taylor Chapman 10 each.

Barnes was 10 of 19 from behind the arc and 9 of 12 at the line. Austin Jeffreys had 16 points and five assists and Kurt Adams added 11 points off the bench — all in the first half.

“We had some guys who didn’t score or who didn’t even take a shot, but they set some great screens and they don’t mind doing it. They’re very unselfish,” said coach Barnes.

The Cardinals led 23-20 at the end of the first quarter despite 18 points by Brandon Barnes. But starters Tre Campbell, Josh Payne and Jeffreys all say out in foul trouble and Sheldon Clark went up 44-30 at the half.

Sheldon Clark led 64-44 after three quarters, but Barnes had 19 points and Jeffreys 11 in the fourth quarter as South Point closed to within 7 points before the Cardinals pulled away.
