Joseph Adkins

BENTON, Ky. — Joseph A. Adkins, 39, of Benton, passed away Thursday, Dec. 1, 2011, at Western Baptist Hospital.

Mr. Adkins worked for the Kentucky State Penitentiary as a guard. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police Barkley Lodge 60. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Casey M. Page Adkins, of Benton; two daughters, Jordan Page Adkins and Rilee Elizabeth Adkins, both of Benton; his mother, Shirley Ann Roberts Adkins of Ironton; one brother, Charles Adkins, also of Ironton, and four sisters, Barbara Allen of Ironton, Brenda Benicker of Willow Wood, Mary Bryant of Scotttown and Gina Sexton of Kitts Hill.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Alexis Nichole Thomas; one sister, Carolyn Adkins and his father, John R. Adkins.

Friends may call after 4 p.m. today at Filbeck-Cann & King Funeral Home and Crematory. Friends may call from 5- 9 p.m. Tuesday at Caniff Funeral Home, 528 Wheatley Road, Ashland, Ky. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Bro. Jonathan Goodman will officiate and burial will follow in the Dixon Cemetery.

 

Devota Thompson

SOUTH POINT — Devota Ann Thompson, 70, of South Point, passed away Friday, Dec. 2, 2011, at the Hospice House of Huntington in Huntington, W.Va., after a long battle with cancer.

Born Nov. 23, 1941, at Omar, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late E. W. and Mary Devota Fitzwater.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Gail Paige Perdomo; one brother, Charles Fitzwater; one brother-in-law, James Turner; one niece, Lisa Warren; and two nephews Michael Chapman and Zackery Reed.

Surviving to celebrate her life are three daughters and sons-in-law, Tina and Mike O’Neill of Monroe, N.C. Barbara and Randy Greathouse of Proctorville and Mary Beth and Terry Wise of South Point; four sisters, Geraldine Turner of Titusville, Fla., Edna Mae and Donald Reed of South Point, Nita and Tim Watts of Franklin Furnace and Carolyn and Zeke Hamrick of Summersville, W.Va.; one sister-in-law, Dorothy Fitzwater, also of Summersville; and a host of nieces and nephews. A thank you is extended to a special niece and caregiver Maggie Chapman.

She will be sadly missed by her six grandchildren, Christopher and (Jessica) Thompson, Bradley Thompson, Mark and (Courtney) Dailey, McKenzie Thompson, Taylor Wise and Zachary Wise; three great grandchildren, Jennavieve Thompson, Alexander Thompson and Braxton Dailey.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Bethel United Methodist Church at Poe with Pastor James “Oz” Gray officiating. Interment will follow in the Fitzwater Family Cemetery at Keslers Cross Lanes. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the White Funeral Home in Summersville.

 

Susan Stewart

COAL GROVE — Susan C. Stewart, 63, of Coal Grove, died Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2011, at the Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky.

The Ironton native was born Sept. 22, 1948, the daughter of the late Harold C. and Mary L. Kitts Dean. She was also preceded in death by her husband, John Edgar Stewart.

Susan was a graduate of Coal Grove High School and was retired from Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Russell, Ky.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister.

She is survived by a son; a sister and a brother.
