BIDWELL — In the movie “Big Jake,” son James McCandles told his father, “Do this, do that. I’ll do as I please.”

Jacob McCandles, played by John Wayne, snapped back, “You’ll do as your told.”

There wasn’t an angry exchange of words, but the Fairland Lady Dragons did just what coach Jon Buchanan asked as they cruised past the River Valley Lady Raiders 53-28 on Thursday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

“Our girls executed what we had on the scouting report. They did exactly what they were supposed to do. I was real proud of that,” said Buchanan.

Chandler Fulks had 16 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists to lead Fairland (4-0, 2-0). Kayla Swiger had 12 points, 3 steals and 2 assists while Terra Stapleton added 10 points and 15 rebounds.

“We didn’t give them any open looks on the perimeter. We didn’t play a good offensive game but we played well defensively,” said Buchanan. “They did a good job with Stapleton but our other kids stepped up.”

The game was scoreless for four minutes until Fulks scored 6 points to give Fairland a 10-4 lead.

Fulks had 6 more points in the second quarter and the defense held River Valley to just 2 points and it was 28-6 at the half.

Swiger scored 10 of her points in the third quarter and it was 40-18.

Fairland hosts the NAPA Auto Parts Holiday Tournament on Monday and Tuesday. Buffalo faces Point Pleasant at 5:30 and Fairland meets Cross Lanes Christian at 7:30.
