Minor changes made to Charlie Creek project

CHESAPEAKE — The remainder of the Charlie Creek project that will straighten out a section of highway between U.S. 52 and County Road 1 could go to bid this summer.
That’s according to Ralph Kline of the Ironton-Lawrence County Community Action Organization.
At its regular meeting Lawrence County Commissioners approved revising the budget of the project, on the drawing board since 2006, at the request of Kline.
That change was necessary to allow the spending of just under $200,000 in Community Development Block Grant funds. The adjustment would not change the budget amount, but simply separate the CDBG money from Ohio Department of Transportation funds.
“We need to spend CDBG funds by the end of the year,” Kline said. “We revised the scope and took ODOT out to spend CDBG funds. When you talk about these kinds of projects, your federal agencies define the scope. In our original scope, it showed ODOT dollars included.”
The overall $4.4 million project included the construction of the Comfort Inn and Suites at the Chesapeake site, land acquisition, and road, water and sewer access.
What’s left is to eliminate the dogleg section of the roadway by the hotel.
“It is to make it a safer and better flowing intersection,” Kline said.
In other action the commissioners:
• Dedicated Shelby Lane into the Rome Township road system;
• Promoted Ashley Reeves, a paramedic from part-time to full-time;
• Proclaimed Becky Bowling Day for the Symmes Valley teacher receiving the 2011 Elementary Math Teacher Award;
• Denied petition to establish Private Drive 2049 in Fayette Township based on the recommendation of the County Engineer because it does not meet the requirements of the Ohio Revised Code;
• Received the weekly dog warden report where 63 dogs were destroyed, five were sold and none were redeemed by owners. There were 114 dogs in custody this week.
