COAL GROVE — When the Coal Grove Lady Hornets look to run, they turn to their speedsters.
Ashley Adkins and Jacy Jones combined for 39 points as they got the Lady Hornets running en route to a 71-23 romp over the Green Lady Bobcats on Thursday.
Collins scored 20 points and Jones had 19 as Coal Grove improved to 7-1. Katey Erwin added 9 points.
“Green had some of their more experienced kids out (hurt and sick) so we applied pressure early to their guards,” said lady Hornets’ coach Rick Roach.
“Jones and Adkins capitalized early by getting some steals and a few run-outs.”
Besides the offensive effort, Roach praised senior Amanda Collins for her performance.
Amanda Collins is doing a great job this year of finding the open person and making some nice assists,” said Roach.
Bobbi Applegate had 9 points — all 3-pointers in the third quarter — to lead Green.
Coal Grove raced to a 19-4 lead in the first quarter and blew the game open in the second quarter by outscoring Green 25-4 to take a 44-8 halftime lead.
The lead was 56-19 after three quarters.
Coal Grove will host South Point on Thursday, Jan. 5.
“It was another good game to get everyone in and get some playing time,” said Roach. “We need to try to stay focused over the Christmas break and comeback ready to play against a tough conference opponent in South Point.”
In the jayvee game, Coal Grove won 27-4.
