PROCTORVILLE — The results matched the pre-game expectations.

Nick Gaines scored with 1.8 seconds to play as the Oak Hill Oaks edged the Fairland Dragons 54-52 on Friday in a showdown of two of the area’s top programs.

“We didn’t play that well at times, but it seemed that anything that could go wrong did,” said Fairland coach Nathan Speed.

“It was a good game. We had our chances but it just wasn’t meant to be.”

Blaine Fuller led three players in double figures for the Dragons who had only four players score. Evan Maddox scored 14 points and Evan Salyers had 12 points and 11 rebounds despite being saddled with foul trouble most of the game.

Oak Hill had a balanced offense with Josh Kisor scoring 11, Nick Gaines and Drew Haislop 10 each and Garrin Stiltner 9. Kisor also had 8 rebounds.

Stiltner had 5 points in the first quarter to offset 5 points by Fuller as the Oaks jumped in front 19-11.

Nathan Campbell had 5 of his 7 points in the second quarter as Fairland rallied to within 26-22 at the half.

Fuller scored 6 more points in the third quarter as Fairland closed the gap to 36-34.

Maddox had 8 points while Haislop scored 7 for the Oaks and the game was tied with 15 seconds left. The Oaks then set up their final play and Gaines cut to the basket and took a pass for the winning layup.

Oak Hill was 20 of 36 from the floor for 56 percent.

“We did what we should on defense except we didn’t close out like we should. They have better shooters this year and they made us pay,” said Speed.

 

The Dragons host Wheelersburg on Tuesday.
