W.Va. pharmacist charged in prescription probe
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) — Federal authorities have charged a pharmacist with conspiracy as part of a prescription drug investigation in southern West Virginia.
The Herald-Dispatch reports that federal prosecutors have asked the court to schedule a plea hearing for James P. Wooley.
Wooley was charged earlier this month with conspiracy to illegally acquire or obtain controlled substances. His attorney, Robert B. Allen, declined comment Monday.
The charge stems from an investigation of the Justice Medical Complex in Kermit. Federal prosecutors say the clinic’s owner and employees used another person’s Medicare provider number to distribute hydrocodone and other controlled substances. Patients were directed to Wooley’s pharmacies in Kermit and Stone Coal.
The clinic’s owner and two doctors were sentenced in 2010 for their roles in the scheme.
Ex-care home worker in W.Va. sentenced
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) — A former senior living facility employee accused of abusing an elderly resident has been sentenced to one to three years in prison.
But media outlets report that 41-year-old Darren Canada could be released in a few months because his sentence includes time served.
Canada was sentenced Thursday in Cabell County Circuit Court for attempt to commit a felony.
He was indicted on charges of second-degree sexual abuse and abuse-neglect of an incapacitated adult. He pleaded guilty to the lesser charge late last year.
The charges stemmed from a January 2010 incident at the Chateau Grove Senior Living in Barboursville. The 81-year-old female victim has since died.
