COAL GROVE — When two teams play hard, the results are usually like, well, the Coal Grove Lady Hornets and South Point Lady Pointers’ game on Thursday.
In a defensive battle, the Lady Pointers pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat the Lady Hornets 40-29 in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
“We played a hard-fought game,” said Lady Hornets’ coach Rick Roach. “Both teams play hard, just as any coach would want. But you always want to be on the winning end and not the other.”
Erin Dillow hit three 3-pointers and scored 15 points to lead the Lady Pointers (11-4, 7-1). Allison Mitchell added 12 points.
Jacy Jones scored 12 points including a pair of 3-pointers while Ashley Adkins scored 11 points for the Lady Hornets (9-5, 4-4).
South Point led 11-8 at the end of the first quarter and built a 24-14 halftime cushion.
But Coal Grove held the Lady Pointers to just 2 points in the third quarter and closed the gap to 26-22.
Dillow hit a pair of 3-pointers in the fourth quarter as the Lady Pointers pulled away late to get the win.
“We got a little lazy in the first half and allowed South Point to hit some easy baskets,” said Lady Hornets’ coach Rick Roach.
“We came out the third quarter and played some great defense. In the fourth quarter we missed too many shots right under the basket.”
