HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — This time the team effort was the downfall of the Chesapeake Lady Panthers.

The Capital Lady Cougars placed three players in double figures and had a solid team effort to beat the Chesapeake Lady Panthers 56-47 Saturday in the second day of the Huntington St. Joe Shootout.

“Overall, our guards handled their pressure pretty well. In the end, their athleticism was the deciding factor,” said Chesapeake coach Chris Ball.

Tanija Spencer scored 14 points, Indian Hairston 11 and Brianna Harris 10 to lead the Lady Cougars.

Amanda Ruffner had 22 points, 9 rebounds, 3 steals and 3 blocked shots to lead the Lady Panthers (12-6). Her inside running mate Jordan Porter scored 17 points while Maggie Smith had 5 assists.

“We had some success inside, but they shot the ball pretty well and they usually don’t shoot it that well. You have to give them credit for hitting their shots,” said Ball.

Capital led 13-12 after the first quarter despite 6 points by Ruffner.

Ruffner scored 6 more points in the second quarter but Capital went atop 25-21 at the half.

The Lady Cougars pulled away to 38-30 lead after three quarters and held off a Chesapeake rally in the fourth quarter as Porter scored 10 points including 8 of 9 at the foul line.
