CHESAPEAKE — At its first board meeting of the year, the Collins Career Center board of directors continued to lay out plans for the future of the school’s $22 million renovation project.

The renovation project includes expanding classroom sizes about 150 square feet and adding an additional 11,000 square feet to the building to meet the requirements of the Ohio School Facilities Commission. The project would also modernize the cafeteria and repair a crumbling infrastructure, which includes repairing the sewage plant, heating and air conditioning, electricity and a leaky roof.

At Monday’s meeting, the board approved a two-year agreement with South Point Local School District for the use of its former high school building during the renovations.

Superintendent Steve Dodgion said only the adult programs would be affected by the move, which would begin at the beginning of the 2012-2013 school year. The cost of the agreement is $60,000 per year, or $5,000 per month.

Board member Tim Johnson noted that the money would not come out of the school’s general budget, but the state Ohio School Facilities Commission budget.

Dodgion also gave an update about CCC’s levy, which will be on the March primary ballot.

In December, CCC filed to have a half-mill permanent improvement levy added to the March 2012 primary ballot.

The levy would bring in about $300,000 a year for the school to keep in a Ohio School Facilities Commission mandated set-aside fund to maintain the campus once its renovation project is complete.

Dodgion said he has been meeting with various civic groups around the county to gain endorsements for the levy.

“It’s been very well received,” Dodgion told the board.

Dodgion said both the Republican and Democratic parties have endorsed the levy, as well as the county’s emergency responders. Dodgion said he will also meet with the Ironton City Council, the Chesapeake Lions Club, Ironton Rotary Club and township trustees from around the county.
