Tenn. man pleads guilty to bank robbery in W.Va.
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) — A Tennessee man faces up to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to robbing two financial institutions in West Virginia.
U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin says 51-year-old Charles Jeffrey Asher wore a security guard uniform and threatened tellers with a replica pistol during both robberies.
Asher entered his plea Monday in federal court in Huntington. Sentencing is set for May 3.
Asher admitted robbing the First Priority Federal Credit Union in Barboursville on Aug. 23, 2011 and a BB&T branch in Hurricane on Oct. 3, 2011.
Ironton In Bloom offers garden tour
IRONTON — Ironton In Bloom, Inc., a local volunteer group, is offering as a fundraising project, a garden-themed tour to the Biltmore Estate Gardens, the North Carolina Arboretum, and other points of interest on the weekend of April 28 and 29.
The $300 price (two people sharing a room) includes roundtrip travel on a deluxe motor coach, one night’s lodging, admission to the gardens, guided tours through the Biltmore Estates and the North Carolina Arboretum, two lunches, one breakfast, taxes and fees and the services of a tour escort. Reservations must be made by March 1.
A December garden trip to Waikiki, Hawaii, is also being planned.

Ironton resident receives Master’s
WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. — Amy Perry of Ironton received a Master of Arts in Teaching Special Education LBD P to 12 during University of the Cumberlands Jan. 12 graduation.
This marked the inaugural graduation class for the physician assistant (PA) program with 28 students receiving their master’s degree.
Get a ‘taste of literature’ Feb. 9
CANNONSBURG, Ky. — A special program at the Kyova Branch of Boyd County Public Library offers a quick taste of literature for busy people.
“Short & Sweet” is at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, at the branch, located in the Kyova Mall across from Elder-Beerman.
Participants will read and discuss two short stories, and enjoy some sweets. The stories are: “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings: A Tale for Children,” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez; and “Let it Snow,” by David Sedaris.
If possible, those who attend should read the stories beforehand. They can be found online, or copies are available at the Kyova Branch.
