COAL GROVE — Picking things up helped the Coal Grove Lady Hornets pick up another win.

The Lady Hornets picked up the pace in the third quarter and turned a close game into an easy 52-23 win over the St. Joseph Female Flyers on Saturday.

“The game started slow and we were not shooting the ball very well,” said Coal Grove coach Rick Roach. “In the third quarter we picked up the intensity and started moving the ball well and getting open looks at the basket.”

Ashley Adkins led Coal Grove with 23 points including four 3-pointers, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 13 deflected passes. Jacy Jones had 11 points and 10 rebounds.

St. Joseph (8-10) was led by Hannah Miller with 9 points. Haley Bartram added a pair of 3-pointers.

Coal Grove (10-8) was up 9-5 at the end of the first quarter. Adkins had all 5 of Coal Grove’s points in the second quarter and Miller got 4 of the Female Flyers’ 5 points and it was 14-10 at the break.

And then came the third quarter.

Adkins scored 12 points including a pair of 3-pointers and Jones scored 5 points as Coal Grove blitzed the Female Flyers 24-1 to take a 38-11 lead.

“The first half we did what we wanted. We controlled the tempo and kept them out of their press,” said St. Joseph coach Nick Miller. “They starting hitting some shots and that enabled them to get into their press.”

Coal Grove plays at Raceland, Ky., on Monday and hosts Chesapeake in their season finale on Thursday.

“We were able to play some younger girls in the fourth quarter and rest our kids for a couple of tough games next week,” said Roach.

St. Joseph hosts Sciotoville East Monday on Senior Night. The junior high girls play at 5 p.m. followed by the junior high boys. The senior night activities begin immediately after the boys’ game at approximately 7:30.
