PEDRO — It was “Trading Places II.”
South Point guards Austin Jeffreys and Brandon Barnes switch positions and the result was a combined 54 points as the Pointers slipped past the Rock Hill Redmen 62-58 Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
Austin Jeffreys went to shooting guard and had a career-high 28 points while Barnes took over the point guard spot and scored 26 as the Pointers improved to 7-9 and 3-5 in the OVC.
“That was Jeffreys best game,” said Pointers’ coach Chris Barnes. “They were denying Brandon so we moved him to the one and that freed up Jeffreys. They both played pretty well.”
The Pointers’ Tre Campbell had 7 rebounds, Josh Payne 6 and Jeffreys 5.
Will McCollister had a big game for Rock Hill with 18 points and 14 rebounds. Andy Knipp had 16 points, 13 rebounds and 5 assists while Drew Kidd scored 15 points including four 3-pointers.
Knipp had 8 points and Kidd hit a pair of 3-pointers as the Redmen took a 16-13 lead. Jeffreys scored 9 points in the quarter.
McCollister, Knipp and Jared Bruce combined for 13 points as the Redmen went up 31-26 at the half.
Barnes scored 11 points and Jeffreys 9 as the duo combined for all 20 points in the third quarter and the Pointers cut the deficit to 48-46. McCollister and Kidd scored 6 points each for the Redmen.
Barnes then scored 6 points in the fourth quarter. He was 2-for-2 at the line but the Pointers missed the front end of three one-and-ones opening the door for the Redmen.
But Rock Hill was unable to hit their shots and the Pointers held on for the win.
“We missed some shots in the fourth quarter and that was the difference,” said Redmen coach Bob Wilds.
