BURLINGTON — Replacing playground equipment at its park overlooking the Ohio River is among the major projects on this year’s agenda for the Concerned Citizens of Burlington.
“We are looking for a grant because we want to redo some of our playground equipment,” said Harriette Ramsey of the citizens’ group. “We understand the grants are still out there and they are competitive.”
The park has a variety of wooden swing sets, slides and other playground equipment including those for individuals with disabilities.
All the equipment was put in place when the Concerned Citizens took over the park more than 20 years ago.
“We have wooden structures and some have been deteriorating,” Ramsey said. “We will have to do it in phases.”
The park is well used by area children as well as those planning parties and receptions.
“This is the only safe place in the vicinity for our children to play,” Ramsey said. “This is what we tried to do and it is used a lot. We have had weddings there, receptions, family reunions, birthday parties.”
Vandals have often struck at the playground equipment, painting them with grafitti.
“You are trying to have something nice,” Ramsey said. “We have had some of our picnic benches thrown over the hill and they are very heavy. It took a lot of people to do that.”
The Concerned Citizens also plans to have its annual spring cleanup, possibly in the latter part of April. Working with the Fayette Township Trustees and the community service group of Lawrence County Municipal Judge Don Capper, the event offers ways for residents to dispose of unwanted items.
“There will be dumpsters behind the Burlington Fire Department where you can bring your items,” Ramsey said. “If you call, and this is especially for the elderly, we will come and get it.”
