Come fall it will be a rematch for Ohio’s 6th U.S. House of Representatives seat as incumbent Republican Bill Johnson will face off with former Rep. Charlie Wilson on the Democratic ticket.
Tuesday both men handily beat their opponents for their party’s nomination. Johnson beat out Victor Smith 44,524 to 8,594 and Wilson pulled 28,434 votes over Cas Adulewicz with 5,717.
Wilson served in Congress from 2007 to 2011, succeeding former Gov. Ted Strickland. He lost to Johnson in the November 2010 general election. Before that he had served in the Ohio Senate and House.
“I am honored to have earned the support of my fellow Democrats, and I congratulate Cas Adulewicz for running a strong campaign,” Wilson said in a prepared statement. “He has a long record of service to southeast Ohio and will continue to be an important community leader. …During this campaign, I have traveled throughout the district talking to hard-working families and business owners from all walks of life about the issues they care about most. These are the folks I have fought for in Congress, and will fight for once again after a successful bid in November. We have to continue working hard to create jobs, move this economy forward, and improve the quality of life in the Ohio River Valley. My opponent wants to focus on supporting partisan rhetoric and passing trade policies that export vital manufacturing jobs overseas.”
It was Johnson’s first try at office when he defeated Wilson two years ago. Johnson is a retired lieutenant colonel with 26 years in the military.
“I’m proud to have earned the overwhelming support of Republicans across eastern and southeastern Ohio,” Johnson said in a release. “I look forward to a spirited campaign ahead during which I’ll proudly put my record of fighting for change against Congressman Charlie Wilson’s history of voting for bigger government, job-killing regulations, and Obamacare.”
