OLBH offers sinus procedure

RUSSELL, Ky. — For those that suffer with chronic sinusitis, Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital (OLBH) offers a surgical technique to allow for easier breathing and relief from frequent sinus headaches.

Sinusitis is an inflammation of the sinus lining caused by infection. Balloon sinuplasty is a procedure for chronic sinusitis patients who are not responding well to medications and are seeking relief from uncomfortable and painful sinusitis symptoms.

OLBH is the only Ashland hospital utilizing the Cyclops multi-angel endoscope for balloon sinuplasty. The Cyclops is the new standard in scopes and aids OLBH’s surgeons by allowing them to see around corners in the sinus cavity to optimize a patient’s surgical experience.

“We have many sufferers of sinusitis in our area and this procedure is extremely effective at relieving symptoms of chronic sinusitis,” Jon A Brinkman, D.O., said.

Brinkman and William VanBeneden, D.O., are Ears, Nose and Throat (ENT) physicians with ENT Associates of Ashland who perform balloon sinuplasty at OLBH.

With balloon sinuplasty, OLBH’s ENT physicians open inflamed sinuses in the same way that heart surgeons open up blocked arteries during balloon angioplasty. The procedure is less invasive than traditional sinus surgery.

Typical treatment begins with medication, which includes Decongestants, Nasal steroids and oral steroids.

“With this procedure, patients return to normal activities very quickly, “VanBeneden said. “The quick recovery time is because unlike conventional sinus surgery, balloon sinuplasty does not include removal of bone or tissue from the nose.”

Speak to your physician to discover if you may be a candidate for balloon sinuplasty. For a physician referral, contact the OLBH CareLine at (606) 833-2273
