Hayes has chance to show voters

Lawrence County’s newest commissioner, Freddie Hayes, has what amounts to a nine-month audition to show voters that he can help move the county forward.

Hayes was appointed Thursday by the Republican Central committee, filling the seat vacated by the late Paul Herrell.

Because of the timeline for filling vacancies that is outlined in the Ohio Revised Code, Hayes will have the opportunity to serve until November where he will face a candidate chosen by the Democrats. The winner earns the right to complete this term that expires in 2014.

Hayes looks as if he can bring a strong business sense and a lifelong passion for Lawrence County to the table. Both of these can be assets if he commits to being a full-time commissioner.

All three commissioners are now Republicans. So despite their individual differences, politics shouldn’t become a factor in accomplishing the things that need to be done.

Although the county is doing better financially than it has in recent years, there are still challenges ahead as the county looks to live within its financial means, promote economic development and continue to provide services to the citizens.

This setup creates a positive scenario for Lawrence County voters because they have the chance to evaluate Hayes’ performance.

The lifelong Lawrence Countian said he has always dreamed of this job. Now it has become a reality and he has a great opportunity to keep it that way through hard work and a commitment to doing the right thing.
