The grassroots campaign manager for former Rep. John Carey and a former Symmes Valley board of education member want the open Republican spot on the county board of elections.

Last week the county’s Republican Central Committee appointed BOE member Freddie Hayes to the county commission, filling the seat held by Paul Herrell, who died in February.

Now Harriet Scragg of Proctorville and Wayne Taylor of Aid are vying to be Hayes’ replacement when the GOP Central Committee meets on Tuesday to name a Republican to the seat.

Scragg, who worked on Carey campaigns for 18 years, has been on the central committee for 20 years and chairwoman of the committee for 15 years. Scragg has also worked in county elections starting at the precinct level for 47 years.

“We need someone with experience on there,” she said. “Right now we have people with no experience. I want to do something for the people. I have a great love of people and a great love of community. I think our election board needs to have someone with experience.”

Also wanting the post is Wayne Taylor, an electronics engineer for New Tech Systems Inc, in Ashland, Ky. Taylor served eight years on the Symmes Valley school board, seven of those as president, and is currently on the county fair board.

“I have always had an interest in Lawrence County and things that go on in Lawrence County,” he said. “(I would want) to make sure the election laws are followed and things are done correctly. I think I can do a great job and be part of giving back to Lawrence County.”

The central committee will meet at 7 p.m. at the county courthouse.
