Billy Butcher

Billy Raymond Butcher, 73, of South Point, went home to be with his Jesus on Saturday, March 17, 2012. Billy was a loving husband, father and grandfather (Zacky) who loved being a part of his church. He especially loved being an usher at the church, picnics with his family, and working on his yard.

A memorial will be at 6 p.m.Wednesday at Apostolic Life Cathedral, Huntington, W.Va., with Pastor E. S. Harper officiating. Billy was born at home in South Point, the son of the late Lewis Martin (L. M.) and Gladys (Toney) Butcher and was the former owner of Chesapeake Auto Parts.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Julia Ann Ward Butcher of South Point; daughter Lisa (Thomas) Cantrell of South Point; son Billy (Tonya) Butcher of Evansville, Ind.; six grandchildren, Brian Douglas, Joshua, Alaina, and Ava Cantrell, Rian (Jessica) and Billy Butcher; two loving sisters, Linda (Dave) Lester and Ruth Mays; and a host of family and friends.

Friends may call from 5 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday at Apostolic Life Cathedral. Dr. Lowell Bishop

On Tuesday March 13, 2012, Dr. Lowell Jay Bishop died as a result of complications of a stroke. He is survived by his spouse of 28 years, Daniel Paul Domer of Salisbury, Md.; George and Kay Rowe (sister), of Ironton; Brent and Darby Blevins (niece) of Ashland, Ky.; Derek (nephew) and Amy Rowe of Ironton; Dara (niece) Rowe of Ironton; Ray (brother) Bishop of Ironton; Robert and Brenda (niece) of Ironton; Steven (nephew) Bishop of Cincinnati; and parents Eddie and Elizabeth Bishop of Ironton.

Dr. Bishop grew up in Ironton, attending Dawson-Bryant High School in Coal Grove. He received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Ohio University in 1971 and a master’s of science in social work degree from University of Louisville in 1977.

Dr. Bishop was employed as a social worker for the Summit County Welfare Department during the 1970s and early 1980s. Beginning in 1984, he served as an assistant professor in the Department of Social Work at the Ohio University where he earned a Ph.D. degree from the Mandel School of Applied Social Science, Case Western Reserve in Social Work in 1988. In 1995, Dr. Bishop accepted a position as an associate professor at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) where he was a highly respected educator, administrator and researcher having received the University System of Maryland Board of Regents Faculty Award for Excellence in Collaboration 2003-2004. In addition, Dr. Bishop served as the UMES Director for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Dual Degree Program in Social Work that is a joint program with Salisbury University.

In 2004, Dr. Bishop assumed the position of chair of the Department of Social Science including supervision of the Organizational Leadership Doctoral Program. During his tenure at the university, Dr. Bishop chaired national, regional and state conferences, received multiple grant awards and completed numerous scholarly works.

Through his grant writing efforts, he secured over $2 million funds to support social services delivery programs. Significant among his efforts was a large worker retraining program following from the closure of plants located on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. He also trained Maryland social workers in the delivery of mental health care to those suffering from HIV/AIDS.

His service to the university and the community was extensive. Dr. Bishop served on a large number of boards and committees including, but not limited to, International Habitat for Humanity Student Organization, Chair, School of the Arts and Professions Service Learning and Outreach Initiatives Committee, School of the Arts and Professions, Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs Resources Center, Bay Shore Enterprises, State of Maryland’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene AIDS Administration Committee Planning Group, Salvation Army Community Education Advisory Committee, Disability Housing Development Group and Wicomico County Minority Outreach Committee. He was a member of the Council of Social Work Education, National Association of Social Workers, a lifelong member of MENSA, and was a Licensed Certified Social Worker in the State of Maryland. Dr. Bishop retired from the University in 2010 to concentrate on his recovery from cancer.

Dr. Bishop was a gentle, gifted man with a keen wit, a sense of fun, and a caring manner. He will be missed by all those that he touched in life.

Betty Soulanille

Betty Lee Bell Carmon Soulanille, 79, of Ironton, passed away Saturday March 17, 2012, at Boyd Nursing and Rehabilitation in Kentucky. The Lawrence County native was born Jan. 11, 1933, the daughter of the late Lee and Addie Spears Bell.

Betty was a 1951 graduate of Dawson-Bryant High School. She worked in the accounting department for the Servodyne Corporation in California. She was a member of the First Tabernacle Church in Ironton where she was also a member of the choir and a substitute Sunday school teacher.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Simon Andrew Soulanille;

three brothers, Howard Bell, Clarence Bell and Arthur Bell; and two brothers-in-law, Jack Bryant and Irvin Shore.

Betty is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Susan Carmon of Ironton; daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Gary Coburn of Ironton; son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Sharon Carmon of Huntington, W.Va.; stepson, Philip S. Soulanille of  California; sister, Jean Bryant of Ironton; sister, Eloise Shore of Ironton; brother and sister-in-law, Earl and Ruth Bell of Beckley, W.Va.; best friend, Sarah Whitehead of Ironton; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Betty never met a stranger.

Funeral will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Phillips Funeral Home with John Stevens and Danny Pancake officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery and friends may call Wednesday from noon until the time of the service at the funeral home. Phyllis Bridges

Phyllis L. Bridges, 86, of Ironton, passed away Sunday, March 18, 2012, at the Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky. The Lawrence County native was born Aug. 9, 1925, the daughter of the late James and Carrie Stephens Morgan. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Charles E. “Bink” Bridges, who passed away Feb. 12, 1995.

Mrs. Bridges was a 1943 graduate of Ironton High School and a homemaker. She was of the Baptist faith and lived all her life in Ironton.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Leslie Meschelle Nelson; a brother, Bill Morgan; four sisters, Edna Bowman, Virgie Lewis, Thelma Fliehman and Myrna Wilson; and two sons-in-law, James L. Gambill and James A. Crowe.

She is survived by three daughters, Sue Gambill of Florence, S.C., Diane Crowe of Florence, S.C. and Shari Nelson of Ironton; eight grandchildren, Lori Owens of Rochester, N.H., Brandy Norris of Timmonsville, S.C., Heather Gambill, Traci Godwin, Tricia Varner and Jamie Byars, all of Florence, Brad Nelson of Ironton and Stephanie Hieronimus of Kitts Hill; 14 great grandchildren; and many loved nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Phillips Funeral Home with Pastor Greg Frasure officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery and visitation will be Thursday from 11 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home. Thomas Goody, 74, of Ironton, died Monday, March 19, 2012, at the Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky. Arrangements are pending at Phillips Funeral Home.

 

Phyllis Davis-Caudell

Phyllis Miller Davis-Caudell, 72, of Russell, Ky., died Sunday, March 19, 2012, at Kingsbrook Life Care Center in Ashland, Ky. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Advance United Methodist Church in Flatwoods, Ky., with Pastor Mark Wilson officiating. Burial will follow at Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods.
