PROCTORVILLE – When it Raines, it pours.

That’s how it felt to the South Point Pointers on Monday as Fairland’s Kyle Raines pitched a two-hit shutout as the Dragons won their Ohio Valley Conference opener 5-0.

Raines struck out nine and walked two in going the distance. He also went 2-3 at the plate with a run batted in.

“Raines threw well for us. We were a little short-handed and he stepped up,” said Fairland coach Bryan Ward.

The game was scoreless until the fourth when Raines singled, stole second and scored when Evan Russell reached on an error.

The Dragons (3-1, 1-0) scored three runs in the fifth inning to open up a 4-0 lead.

Blaine Fuller was safe on an error, Dylan Murphy walked, they moved up on a passed ball and Matt Aliff hit a sacrifice fly. Eric Riley grounded out as a run scored and then Raines singled and Josh Ross had an RBI double.

Russell walked, pinch-runner Luke Phillips stole second and Murphy singled for the Dragons final run in the sixth.

Brandon Boggs and Josh Lien had the South Point hits.
